Photosynthesis Lab
Hypothesis We predict that the leaves amount of photosynthesis will depend on how it is covered. We think the black will have the least amount of photosynthesis, cellophane will have some, and uncovered will have the most. Also, that the uncovered leaves will have more starch than those covered.
Purpose To determine if the wavelength and light intensity will change the amount of photosynthesis.

Purpose To determine if the wavelength and light intensity will change the amount of photosynthesis.
Materials
- black paper
- blue florescent cellophane
- plant-green
- scissors
- petri dishes
- tape
- paper towel
- test tube
- lugol's iodine
- tweezers
- black pencil
- plant-red
- mixing stick
- dropper
Procedure
Day 1:
- cover different leaves with both black paper and cellophane.
Day 2:
- Take off paper and cellophane and cut off leaves that were covered and not covered.
- Remove chlorophyll by heating in test tube in ethonal. Then rinse leaves.
- Test the color changes by placing in separate petri dishes (red plant tested separately) and put iodine on the leaves.
Results:
Data Analysis:
In our results we concluded that the uncovered leaf had the most photosynthesis because when we tested with iodine, the normal leaf was the darkest. We believe we had an error with one of our leaves that didn't full submerge in the boiling water to extract its chlorophyll. We can also show that the black paper successful reduced the amount of photosynthesis due to the cut of off light caused by the paper. Next the colored foil and the red leaf were given a score of three, although there was more starch then the leaf covered with black paper, these leaves still didn't have as much photosynthesis as the normal leaf or green leaf.
Reflection:
My group worked very well together. We had designated jobs and all worked together to complete the tasks. Something we could have done differently was that we could have used our time a little more carefully, however our collaboration was great. We discussed the changes the leafs under went and ideas on how to stop photosynthesis from occurring. It was interesting to see the leaves after the chlorophyll was extracted after we boiled it and it was also very neat to see the starch react to the iodine. Overall, this was a very easy and collaborative lab.
